BILL THOMS, AUTHOR AND GROWER - Bulbophyllums

Bill grows his plants in shallow cedar baskets rather than on cork bark mounts. Bill believes that because they are easier to keep moist in a basket than a mounted specimen, his plants grow bigger and have more flowers. In his book called “Bulbophyllums”, Bill describes the technique and the results are amazing. It is not unusual for Bill's plants to have more than 100 flowers with unblemished leaves and overflowing a wood and wire 16 cm x 30 cm basket. In his presentation, Bill will tell us about best growing techniques as well as recommend species and hybrids that will thrive in different growing environments that we have in Calgary.

Shawn is a member of FOS and his Calgary nursery specializes in temperate orchids that are hardy in Calgary gardens. Garden Slippers has been in business for 10 years and has gained a loyal following for the wonderful selection of rare cypripedium orchids that thrive outdoors in Canadian gardens. Shawn will tell us all about growing cypripedium orchids outdoors in Calgary as well as the latest new plants available in Canada. Shawn’s cypripediums have been awarded a number of AOS Awards of Merit, including Cypripedium Pixi ‘Pop’, Cypripedium Pixi ‘Purple Haze’ and most recently Cypripedium guttatum ‘Spot’. SERGIO GARCIA, OLOMPALI ORCHIDS - Laelia purpurata and its Varieties

When I spoke to him, he said: “Yes, I do know that Laelia purpurata has been renamed as a Cattleya, but make the choice to continue calling it a Laelia”. Sergio has given presentations at the American Orchid Society Annual Meeting as well as many prestigious orchid shows around the world. It should be an interesting evening.
